The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has reiterated its commitment to securing Nigeria’s maritime domain and protecting Critical National Assets and Infrastructure as key to economic stability and energy security.
Commandant General, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi stated this at the opening of the 2nd International Conference on Maritime, Trade and Transport, organized by the Global Maritime Academy held at the Petroleum Training Institute Conference Centre, Delta State.
The conference, themed, “The Maritime Sector: Harnessing the Potentials, Challenges and Future Trends,” provides the needed platform for the NSCDC to restate its determination to deliver on its core mandates.
Speaking on behalf of the Commandant General, NSCDC Delta State Commandant, Chinedu Igbo noted that Nigeria’s maritime space holds immense economic potential but faces complex security challenges including piracy, illegal bunkering, pipeline vandalism, and threats to port and offshore infrastructure.
He stated that the theme aligns directly with the Corps’ statutory mandate under the NSCDC Act of 2003 as amended in 2007, particularly the protection of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure such as oil and gas pipelines, jetties, ports, power installations, and communication cables.
“Under the leadership of Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi OFR, mni, the NSCDC has deepened its reform agenda anchored on professionalism, intelligence-led operations, training, and inter-agency collaboration.
While noting that Corps’ Marine, Anti-Vandal, and Critical Infrastructure Protection units are being repositioned to respond proactively to emerging threats in the maritime space, Igbo stressed that securing the maritime environment requires synergy between government agencies, private operators, academia and international partners.
The NSCDC boss commended the Global Maritime Academy for convening the forum and pledged continued collaboration with all stakeholders to ensure a secure, resilient, and prosperous maritime domain that supports Nigeria’s economic growth and national development.
The conference featured technical sessions, paper presentations, and an induction ceremony into the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport of Nigeria, presided over by the National President, Dr. Oyeyemi.
Present at the conference were the immediate past Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, and other dignitaries.
