Archbishop Okeke Confirms Over 600 Parishioners at SS John and Paul Parish, Awada

The Catholic Archbishop of Onitsha and Metropolitan of the Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province, His Grace, Most Rev. Valerian Okeke, has administered the Sacrament of Confirmation to over 600 parishioners of SS John and Paul Catholic Church, Awada, in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The event featured the administration of the Sacrament of Confirmation, blessing and installation of statues of St. John and St. Paul.
More than 60 Catholic priests concelebrated the Mass, underscoring the significance of the occasion.
In his homily titled “Seeking Through Wisdom,” Archbishop Okeke emphasized the principles of retributive justice and the inevitable consequences of human actions.
Drawing inspiration from the Books of Sirach (15:15–20), Corinthians (2:6–10), and Matthew (5:17–37), he explained that God, through the Holy Spirit, has revealed His saving plan to humanity and granted each person the freedom to choose between good and evil.
The prelate stressed that individuals must bear the consequences of their choices, which, he noted, are inherently tied to moral law.
He urged the faithful to choose what is good at all times, reminding them that Sin ultimately leads to spiritual and social harm.
“Life is full of choices, and every choice we make without regard for the love of God and humanity is bound to backfire. We are therefore called to be careful in our decisions and to remember that we become what we choose. Pray for the spirit of discernment,” Archbishop Okeke admonished.
In an address of welcome, the parishioners described Archbishop Okeke as a dynamic and visionary shepherd whose pastoral leadership has positively impacted countless lives.
They expressed profound joy at his presence, noting that his visit brought renewed spiritual vitality to the parish community.
They highlighted several milestones achieved under his leadership, including the establishment of Shanahan University, Onitsha, the Youth Village in Amansea, and extensive scholarship programs for both secular and religious studies.
They also cited his contributions to humanitarian services, human development initiatives, enterprise, education, and infrastructural expansion within the archdiocese.
The parishioners further commended the Archbishop for appointing Rev. Fr. Dr. Aloysius Maduka Agba as their Parish Priest, describing him as a worthy reflection of the Archbishop’s pastoral vision.
Since assuming office in October last year, Fr. Agba has introduced the Monday Divine Mercy Eucharistic Adoration programme and implemented notable infrastructural improvements, including the installation of CCTV cameras, an upgraded sound system, and interlocking tiles with front rails in the church premises.
In his remarks, the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Dr. Aloysius Maduka Agba, expressed deep gratitude to Archbishop Okeke for his pastoral visit and for confirming the candidates. He praised the Archbishop’s fatherly love, care, and unwavering encouragement.
Fr. Agba also acknowledged the presence of the Chancellor of the Archdiocese, Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Prudentius Emeka Aroh; the Vice Chancellor, Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Basil Ekwunife; and numerous priests and religious who graced the occasion.
Speaking to journalists, Fr. Agba described the celebration as “a great day of a father visiting his children.”
He reiterated that receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation signifies receiving the Holy Spirit and divine empowerment to confront life’s challenges.
He urged the newly confirmed faithful to remain steadfast in spreading the gospel and to serve as worthy ambassadors of Christ.
Reflecting on his priestly vocation, Fr. Agba stated that the glory of God remains his principal inspiration.
“When the people of God are in my heart, I have no option but to give my best. I strive to do ordinary things in extraordinary ways so as to draw people closer to God,” he said.
He further commended the parishioners for their strong faith and commitment, describing them as a community eager to serve God. He also praised the priests working with him for their dedication and collaborative spirit.
Several priests working with Fr. Agba in the Parish including, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Okwuokolo, Rev. Fr. Dr. George Adimike, Rev. Fr. Francis Okeke and Rev. Fr. Anthony Okoye attested to his good character and inclusive leadership.
Also parish leaders including Hon. Isaiah Cardinal Umennaihe, Evangelist Ephraim Emeleje, Chukwuka Duru "Igwe Jesu Amaka" and, Evangelist Ndubuisi Emenike attested to Fr. Agba’s exemplary character and sound leadership, noting that the positive transformation witnessed in their parish within a short period he arrived is enormous.
The presentation of gifts to Archbishop Okeke by the parishioners marked the high point of the historic celebration, symbolizing their appreciation and unity with their chief shepherd.
